The Worshipful Master WBro.Mark Smith of The Union Lodge of Mark Master Masons No.124 on the 23rd February 2017 was delighted to welcome RWProf.Denovan K.Wilson and several other distinguished brethren as visitors into the lodge. The lodge work for the evening was to receive a talk by WBro.Martin Murray, Secretary, the title of which was “The Keystone or Plug”.
WBro.Murray gave an excellent presentation of this piece of masonic knowledge which he had found in the extensive works published by the Rev.Neville Cryer. The talk gave an insight into the meaning of the role played by the keystone and the square ashlar in our Mark Ceremony.
After the talk the Worshipful Master had the pleasing duty of presenting the PGM with a cheque from the four Host Lodges. The Host lodges decided to work together as one under the expert direction of WBro.Mark Smith who worked tirelessly in getting a team together and organised a Race Night which was not only enjoyed by all those who went to the races but also reached the target required.
In his reply RWProf.D.K.Wilson mentioned his delight not only that the Host Lodges had been successful in raising their contribution but also in what he hopes will continue as a worthwhile working together of the four lodges. He also noted that this was the first time to receive this particular cheque personally and he felt that it may well become a tradition.
At the festive board RWProf D.K.Wilson informed the brethren about the progress of the Charity Walk Fundraising which has already reached over £7200. The aim of the organisers of the Walk is to publicise the Mark Benevolent Fund and the good work it does, the target of raising a £100.000 will undoubtedly go a very long way to that goal.
The PGM was fully confident that he only had to say to the people in the Province of Durham to do their best which they certainly have so far. The Queen had said once that the people of this country inspired her. RWProf Denovan K.Wilson echoed this sentiment and said that the brethren in Durham had inspired him, and he and his fellow walkers were more determined than ever to complete the eight mile walk in the same inspired manner.
In conclusion the PGM mentioned the programme called the “ The fourth step to the Mark”.This will be presented by brethren of the Durham Lodge of Installed Mark Masters No.1492. It is a Mark version of a “Gavel Night”. Any lodge can request to come to a presentation with their invited guests who want to learn more about the Mark Degree and possibly join a Mark Lodge.
The Durham Lodge of Installed Mark Masters No.1492 cannot recruit candidates for the Mark themselves, so no lodge has to fear losing a potential candidate. The motto of the “four steps to the Mark” is that because we are good Craft Masons and Craft Masons like to join the Mark because they like what they have seen at our Mark meetings.
